Is the dimmer switch retaining ring B0617 an original piece for the 1949 CJ3a? I'm looking for evidence of one being there at one time.

No, this if tor 6 or 12 volts. There are two options for the 24 volt system and it depends on whether you have Douglass (8380675) or Packard (A1DIMMER) connections. Thanks

Sorry, i dont have a diagram but really its just the hi and low wire on either side then power wire going to this.

The center post is power. The posts to either side of the center post are hi/low. You can wire it either way.
