HAVE A 1959 WILLYS WAGON WITH 6-226 HURRICANE. RUNS GREAT BUT LAKING OIL AT REAR MAIN AND TIMING COVER. IF I PULL THE TRANSMISSION, BELLHOUSING, FLYWHELL, ETC. CAN THE REAR MAIN SEAL BE ACCESSED AND REPLACED WITHOUT PULLING THE ENGINE AND REMOVING THE CRANKSHAFT?

Willys Jeep Parts Tech:
If you are rope rear main you have to stick with rope. If neoprene you have to stick with neoprene on those engines. They will not interchange.
Willys Jeep Parts Tech:
If you put it on a lift you can get access but you have to drop the crank down to get access.

We have a 1957 Willys Truck w/ L 6-226. How can you tell if its suppose to be rope or neoprene if you don't know if the seal you are replacing is the original seal ?

Willys Jeep Parts Tech:
You would want to drop your oil pan and check it prior to ordering to be sure.

I have rebuilt a 1962 226 engine. The rear main seal is not rope. I have oil leak coming from the rear main area. My question is, does any of the bell housing bolts go into the engine that would need sealant? Looks like possible oil following threads (center bolt inside bell housing to block)

Willys Jeep Parts Tech:
No, I dont believe any of the bell housing bolts are sealed at the bolt. But alot of people use sealant at the transmission where it bolts.

I have a 1958 willys station wagon with a 6-226 engine. got total rebuild, but rear main seal leaks. was rope, a good mechanic replaced rope once and still leaks. I want to try neoprene. I'm at wits end here.

Willys Jeep Parts Tech:
They are not interchangeable. You have to stick with rope if your rope and vise versa. I would check your crankshaft machine surface and filler block for wear.

I have a 1957 pickup with 6-226 will it have a rope or neoprene rear main seal

Willys Tech:
You could be either rope or neoprene. Its right around the cut off. You will need to check. They are not interchangeable.

Does the 921039 rear main seal fit the military 230 tornado used in the M715?

Willys Tech:
This is for the 6-226 engine only.

Does this replace the rope seal that had been used in the super HurricNE 6?

Willys Tech:
Your rear main on the 6-226 is not interchangable. If you have rope you have to stick with rope. If you have neoprene you have to stick with neoprene.
