HAVE A 1959 WILLYS WAGON WITH 6-226 HURRICANE. RUNS GREAT BUT LAKING OIL AT REAR MAIN AND TIMING COVER. IF I PULL THE TRANSMISSION, BELLHOUSING, FLYWHELL, ETC. CAN THE REAR MAIN SEAL BE ACCESSED AND REPLACED WITHOUT PULLING THE ENGINE AND REMOVING THE CRANKSHAFT?
Willys Jeep Parts Tech:
If you are rope rear main you have to stick with rope. If neoprene you have to stick with neoprene on those engines. They will not interchange.

I have rebuilt a 1962 226 engine. The rear main seal is not rope. I have oil leak coming from the rear main area. My question is, does any of the bell housing bolts go into the engine that would need sealant? Looks like possible oil following threads (center bolt inside bell housing to block)
Willys Jeep Parts Tech:
No, I dont believe any of the bell housing bolts are sealed at the bolt. But alot of people use sealant at the transmission where it bolts.

Willys Jeep Parts Tech:
They are not interchangeable. You have to stick with rope if your rope and vise versa. I would check your crankshaft machine surface and filler block for wear.
