I have a 57 CJ5 and the hole on the bell housing is rectangular and 3 inches by 1.5 inches and it is on both sides. Do you have a boot that will fit this hole? Obviously this round one won't work.

Sorry this wont fit for the square hole. This is only for the round hole. I don't believe a boot for the square hole it made. Really at the bottom of your bell housing you have a drain hole.

will this fit a M38? Does it stay outside of the bell housing? what keeps it from sliding away from the hole?

Yes this will work for the M38. The main sleeve of the boot sticks inside the bellhousing.
