I have a 1947 CJ-2A. Starts and runs great until about the last quarter of the accelerator, then bogs down. I have a small clip on the throttle butterfly to hold it open about 1/8" and it works but idles high. Won't start without the slightly open butterfly. Any guess for my mechanic on what to adjust?
Willys Jeep Parts Tech.:
Check your engine's vacuum. At idle (550-600 rpm) once fully warm and no longer choked you should be generating 20 inches of draw.

Carb is on a 48 cj2. Runs fine, idles good within 1-2 minutes after start. The choke doesn't seem to do its job if it sits for a week. Crank it a few times and give it a shot of ether, starts right up. Choke seems to be working at 1/2 pull after start to keep running. What's with no start on full choke?
Willys Jeep Parts Tech:
You should have your idle set 475-500 rpm. At idle once fully warm and no longer choked your engine should be generating 20" of vacuum draw. If its not you may have a vacuum leak or need to check cold clearances/compression. Email mike@kaiserwillys.com to help.

Is this ready for ethanol fuel?
Willys Jeep Parts Tech:
It is but I would never use ethanol fuel. It is terrible for your tank and fuel system. Use only NON-ethanol. You can find it anywhere that sells gas near water and boats.

Hi, I recently ordered this carb as well as a carburetor to manifold gasket. Upon attempting to mount the gasket as well as carb have a different spacing than my manifold. The bolts on the manifold are about 1/2 in. wider apart than the carb mounting holes. I’m new to Willys and have been informed I have a CJ2A.

Mike, both the linked docs here and various boards recommend installation of an inline fuel pressure regulator, delivering between 1-3/4 and 2 pounds of fuel pressure. On installation of the Solex on my L134, the mixture doesn't seem to be able to be leaned properly - it always runs too rich.

I have this Solex carb on an M-38 with a L-134. Since it was new, it seems to lose the fuel in the reservoir after it sits, even for a short time, and needs to be primed. This involves carrying a gas can, unstrapping the windshield, raising it, unlatching the hood, raising it, removing the air horn from the carb and dumping gas down it. The priming has to be repeated several times depending upon how long it has been sitting, until the bowl fills up and it continues to run. Then, everything has to be put back. After it clears out the excess gas from priming, it runs great, although it always needs some choke. Is there a way to remedy this, or to add a primer like aircraft use, which can be operated from the driver's seat?
Tom:
On mine, the float sticks since new. Tap the carb body then crank it, bowl will fill and run.

I would make sure you are pumping your pedal a bit before starting and during start up as well. Not enough to flood but get motor running. You will always need to choke a cold engine.

i purchased the solex carb for my 1946 willys cj2a. i installed it and it ran fine everything worked as it should. After 12 hours there is no fuel left in the carb. i cannot figure out what the problem is. I have taken it to four professional mechanics and a local who worked on these while in the military and all of which say it has been hooked up correctly. So i had kaiser willys send me a replacement thinking it was a faulty carb but after installing the second one I am now facing the same problem. I cannot figure out what the problem is. I have put a new fuel pump in and i am getting plenty of pressure from it.

I have a CJ-3A that is backfiring and dying. If I keep the engine revved it stays running but you can feel the occasional bump of an almost-backfire. Distributor was replaced by a mechanic about 3 yrs ago, replaced the spark plugs yesterday. Tried adjusting the carb and while it helped the roughness of the revved engine, as soon as you let off the gas it backfires and dies. Was running fine until about a month ago. I am no mechanic, learning all this as I go. Suggestions?
Willys Tech:
I could be a fuel delivery problem. You may want to check your float. I would also try advancing the timing to see if that does the trick as well.

Hello, I have been looking for a replacement carburetor for a 4-134 in a 53 cj3b which has a 57 under carrage.
