In my Willy’s manual, it mentioned that in later models this switch was no longer used/needed, the governor can be wired directly to the kick down switch… did I read this correctly? Thanks

Is this a normally-open or normally-closed switch?

Normally they would be an open switch that is closed when activated.

i have a 1950 jeepster with overdrive and all of a sudden it won't come out of reverse. one or two times in the past it would go out of reverse but turning the key off and sitting fixed the immediate problem. could this be the problem?

You would want to check to make sure your transmission is shifting properly. That is more likely the problem.
