1962 cj6 w/ dana 44 rear and dana 25 front differential. My drive gear for the speedometer spins on the shaft and the speedometer cable gear does not match the tooth pattern. I was told that the gear ratio makes a difference on which speedo gears you need, i have 14 teeth on the speedo cable gear and the drive gear has 9 i think, could be 8. Any suggestions?
Willys Jeep Parts Tech:
Any more there really is only the one gear available and they read pretty accurate overall.

On a CJ 3b the speedo cable turns the opposite direction to what it is supposed to, that is the speedo works fine if the car is in reverse, but not forward! The drive gears appear to be correct, and the speedo is a new replacement. any clues? Note the turn direction on the old speedo and the new are the same.

I think maybe the A1511 is installed backwards but Im just guessing what someone has done to make it do this. It is a gear on gear connection so, that is very unusual.

My speedometer gear turns free on the shaft. When you say it presses onto the shaft, is it tight or snug? Mine pins easily, Do I need to replace it?

Am replacing the rear seal on Transfer case and rebuilding hand-brake assembly on my '61 CJ-3B. Speedo drive gear spins freely on the output shaft. Is that right? What makes it turn with the shaft? The speedometer seemed to be working fine before disassembly.
Willys Jeep Parts Tech:
The drive gear A1511 is pinched by the rear output yoke. Make sure that is in place properly.

Is the gear suppose to turn freely on the output shaft or should it press on the shaft?

Willys Tech:
Sounds like it could be the cable or drive gear.

Do you have the driven speedometer gear, the one that mates to the above gear, that actually turns the speedometer cable?
