Hello, Should I lightly oil the seal surface or crank journal before installing the cap? Also, what sealant do I use on the plugs and does the sealant get put somewhere on the cap too? Thanks

No you would not need to do that. Any you would be looking to use permatex gasket maker.

Do you have any instructions I how to replace the rear seal in Willys 134 engine with out removing it from the jeep. I see some comments that the oil pan only needs to be removed. Please explain future. Thank you.

I just reassembled my engine and did put in the rear seals the same way the old ones were set - than today I saw the instruction video and found out that the old ones, and now my new ones, were/are places with the lip inwards and not outwards. What consequences will this have? Do I definitly have to correct this?

I received the neoprene rear main oil seal for jeep f134. No installation instructions included. I don't know which direction to install. Any help appreciated.

Sorry about that. Lip goes towards the engine. Now, the packings should protrude approximately 1/4" from the case. With the oil pan installed, it will force them tightly into the holes and effectively seal any openings. Thanks!

Has this seal been improved from the original fel pro seals? I just burnt a bearing up using that old fel pro seal do to it putting pressure on the crank and heating it up and i would rather not do that twice

Have solved my transfer case rear seal leak. Now ready to go after leak at rear of engine. Suspect rear main seal. Can this be done without removing transmission, bell housing, clutch assy, and flywheel?

Using the red highlight above for rear main oil seal installation shows the seal shoulder on the inside. The service manual for universal Jeep vehicles, on page 46, fig. 58 shows the shoulder on the outside. Confused which is correct?

To install this seal, i have read in the Q/A that oil pan and crankshaft must be removed. However, the service manual has a note on p. 31 that reads "removal of crankshaft may be accomplished only with the engine out of vehicle"... Can you confirm this, or is it possible to install seal without pulling engine? Thanks for your help

I just replaced my real seals using a device called a sneaky pete. I removed the oil pan and rear crankshaft bearing cap and seal, then used the sneaky pete to pull the new seal into place. After a few tries the sneaky pete worked.

You can do it with the engine still in. Typically you can just lower the crankshaft from the bottom. Having the vehicle on a lift is easiest.

does the thin lip go toward the flywheel or the engine. A previous question about this was answered the lip goes to the inside but what do you mean by the inside? Thanks and a picture would be very helpful. I have the engine apart for so long I forgot how it came out. Thanks.

Can you drop the oil pan and pull the old side cap seals out and replace the new ones with out doing anything else.

Does this seal fit the 1970 225 V6 3.7l. If not can you recommend correct seal? Thank you.

This is for the 4-134 engine only. We do offer complete engine overhaul gasket sets for the V6-225 engine part number: 948965

What diameter are the side packing in this kit? Anything over .375 will not fit the military block.

approx. .35" like original. They are for all 4-134 engines.

Should have added to my previous question, hit wrong key. How far do the side cap seals protrude on a L134?

Hi, We are working on an L134 engine refurbishment and my Mechanic's experience is very bad with the rear oil sealing. He used both the old rope style and a rubber kind of version but the oil is still dipping. We want to buy now a set of seal which will work "for good". Are we good buying these ? We looked at a FELPRO seal which has a quite a wide shoulder - looks solid. What would you recommend ? How about using gasket sealer like Right Stuff when putting engine together again ? Thanks !! Yes, these are the new improved seals. You should have no trouble. I would just check the machine surface on your crankshaft for grooves.

Do you trim the side cap seals flush? Or leave some protruding? Should the main seal be flush with the cap?

Willys Tech:
They should stick out a bit but there is a spec in the mechanics manual to fit it. Please call us toll free we can help.

Which side faces the flywheel? The outer lip appears thicker on one side.

Willys Tech:
The lip should go to the inside.

Does the cj6 use the same seal?

Willys Tech:
Yes as long as you have the 4-134 engine.

Is it necessary to remove the flywheel in order to drop the crankshaft when changing the rear main seals?

Willys Tech:
You will need to drop the oil pan and bearing caps for sure.

Where do the 2 round (about pencil size) rubber sticks go?

Willys Tech:
Those are your side cap seals.

How do you get the top seal around with out removing the engine?

Willys Tech:
You just drop the oil pan and crankshaft from below.
